Non Revenue Water Management

Non-Revenue Water (NRW) is the difference between the water pumped in the distribution mains and the amount of water that is billed. NRW is the factor that indicates a water utility’s performance. Lower NRW indicates the good performance of utility.

During the last few years, many water utilities are facing difficulties with high NRW levels, Among the NRW management strategies, water pressure management is the most popular towards the goals of effective and efficient water use. In an effort to improve the level of services provided to consumers, minimise its operating expenses and reduce water leakage and pipes’ bursts, water utilities reply on water pressure management. The revenue losses are caused mainly due to the reduction of pressure-dependent water consumption.

High levels of NRW are detrimental to the financial viability of the water utilities, as well as the quality of the water itself. Water utilities suffer from huge financial costs of treating and pumping water only to see it leak back into the ground, and the lost revenues from water that could have otherwise be used/sold.

The need to manage NRW and better and protect precious water resources has become increasingly important. Reducing NRW will also ensure a more stable water supply as improved performance will provide full pressure distribution 24×7.

While there can be several reasons for leakages the major one is due to bad quality of equipment like valves, joins, connections and pipes. The most problematic leakages are those that are not visible in the surface. Water hammer and poor water pressure management also contribute largely for the leakages. Thus, high quality, functional and operational valves remains the backbone for any effective water supply system with less NRW.
